Set in nineteen-eighties Los Angeles, the story follows eighteen-year-old Clay, returned home for Christmas from college in New Hampshire. I’m jealous that she got to discuss it in a class because I think I would have gotten more out of it that I didn’t even realize.

And it rings true. This book gets a bad rap for a lot of reasons.
I love all the characters’ This book seems boring and shallow, and reading it gives me an anesthetized, hollow, detached feeling that Brer would not describe as entirely pleasant. The novels are also linked by common, recurring characters, and dystopic locales such as Los Angeles and New York.

They wear the same fashionable clothes, have the same hairstyles and suntans, listen to the Set in nineteen-eighties Los Angeles, the story follows eighteen-year-old Clay, returned home for Christmas from college in New Hampshire. I admit, it’s probably hard to capture the mood of the novel, but when the focus is shifted to something entirely different and everything that made the novel into what it is has been taken away, it creates something else.
And incidentally, even though the movie based on this novel was torpid and timid, half-hearted and half-baked, there’s a genuinely terrifying and heartbreaking movie called ALPHA DOG based on actual events which nails everything this story is trying to say. Throughout the novel, someone will inform Clay that “someone” as OD’d, or died.
